Kataragama deviyo
Raw mango x india art fair x keelaka dance company
An original production, commissioned by India Art Fair and Raw Mango for their exhibit at Museum of Art and Photography, Bengaluru titled Chay Reds, Ferrous Black: The untold stories of Indian Trade Textiles in Sri Lanka.
The piece is inspired by the motif of the Katagarama Skanda Deviyo, that is etched on an 18th century temple flag and banner. It brings to life local poetic traditions of Sri Lanka.
Our performance translates a motif of Skanda into movement by blending the storytelling of the Hindu classical tradition of India, with the poetic oral traditions of Katagarama, Sri Lanka.
The choreography is an amalgamation of Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance, fusing mythology, folk and fiction, while incorporating English dialogue and live music.
This piece has been created by Jyotsna Shourie and Aneesha Grover
With live vocals by Dr Kalaimamani O.S. Arun
