Devadasi literally means “servants of the gods”, a practice that had its roots in medieval. India. It was originally considered a sacred calling as Devadasis were ritually ‘wedded’ to the

Lord. They served the deity by dancing and singing at his shrine.

Temple dancers were considered auspicious as they brought blessings and prosperity to the community. Over time however the system became corrupted , royal patronage faded, and during Colonial times, temple dancing was banned and considered immoral.

Our story follows a group of Devadasis in a temple in South India and brings to the fore vignettes of their lives .Dancers of today revere the Devadasi as she was the true and original custodian of the art of Bharatanatyam.
